Empowering Through Skills: e-Learning for Field Workers
For over 25 years, I have worked closely with NGOs, companies, field workers, mobilizers, and field teams. I have seen firsthand the challenges they face—from lack of structured training to poor mentoring support.
Many field staff are expected to handle complex interactions, stakeholder engagement, and project execution, yet they receive little to no formal training on how to do this effectively.
I started this eLearning platform to bridge this gap—to provide simple, practical, and job-focused training for field staff, helping them build skills, improve confidence, and enhance their impact.
The Problem: What Field Staff Struggle With
Field teams often struggle due to gaps in training, communication, and support systems. Based on informal research from assessing the needs of 500+ field workers with different job roles in different organizations working for different causes, I identified several common challenges (Root Causes). These challenges hurt not just individual workers, but also organizations—leading to lower efficiency, poor project outcomes, and increased operational costs.
Our Research & Findings
To solve these problems, my team and I spent two years analyzing real challenges using a LogFrame Approach and Problem Tree Analysis. This research helped us design a structured learning solution that directly addresses the skill gaps in the field.
Problem Tree
The Root Causes Behind Skill Gaps

Problem Tree Analysis
Key Problem | Root Causes | Impact |
Limited Access to Essential Skills for Field Workers
| 1. Lack of Structured Training: Limited availability of structured, role-specific training programs. 2. Weak Skill Application: Lack of a strong connection between existing skills and field application. 3. Limited Learning Resources: Lack of tailored learning resources for field roles. 4. Accessibility Challenges: Skill-building opportunities not easily accessible in many regions. 5. Limited Practical Training: Practical, hands-on learning approaches not widely integrated. 6. Financial Constraints: Budget constraints for staff training. 7. Recruitment Challenges: Recruiting skilled field professionals for fieldwork can be challenging. 8. Lack of Continuous Upskilling: Organizations often operate in dynamic environments, requiring continuous upskilling. 9. Misaligned Skill Development: Skill development is not always aligned with evolving fieldwork demands. 10. Lack of Professional Growth: Low professional development opportunities structure.
| 1. Task Complexity Issues: Field workers face difficulties in handling complex tasks. 2. Decision-Making Challenges: Lower confidence in independent decision-making. 3. Project Performance Issues: Inconsistent performance in project execution. 4. Team Efficiency Concerns: Teams may struggle with efficiency and adaptability. 5. Workload Burden: Increased workload pressure due to skill gaps. 6. Community Engagement Issues: Reduced effectiveness in community engagement. 7. High Staff Turnover: Higher staff turnover due to role-related challenges. 8. Workforce Optimization Issues: Limited optimization of workforce potential. 9. Inefficient Resource Utilization: Resource utilization may not be maximized effectively. 10. Communication & Coordination Barriers: Persistent communication and coordination issues. 11. Inefficient Workforce Development: Overall the field team becomes inefficient by the mid of the projects by loosing their enthusiasm. |
These findings showed that simply hiring more field staff was not the solution. So our team and me created a Solution Tree to find out the exact solutions to address these root causes.
